Our aim is to serve our members by encouraging development of their photographic skills through education, exhibitions of photographic accomplishments, friendship with others who share a love of photography and to share our talents with individuals and organizations in our community.

The Society
Kilkenny Photographic Society was founded in 1983 and has approximately 50 members. It is a forum for those interested in photography. In addition to the mission statement above we provide a showcase for the work of amateur photographers through exhibitions, talks and competitions.

The Membership
The most essential asset of Kilkenny Photographic Society are its members. We range in age from early 20’s to our oldest ‘Honorary Member’ who is 90+, from founder members to those who have joined this year, male and female. Some have a particular interest in Black & White, others Colour, there are a few who still prefer the chemical darkroom, others who prefer the studio and the less experienced who wish to experiment and develop their own particular aspect of photography.

In recent years many of our members have successfully applied for their licentiate from the Irish Photographic Federation. New members are welcome at any time.

Digital Photography has allowed our members to become more creative and each member approaches it in his or her own particular style. With cameras, software and accessories evolving almost daily we are all constantly learning. To this end, each member is actively encouraged to share their experience within the group. We have added a discussion forum to our website which should help with the exchange of information, tips and techniques.

The ethos of the society is one of non-judgemental encouragement, where each member can feel safe to share his or her experience of image-making, use and care of equipment, film, chemicals, digital equipment, storage and in general pushing the boundaries with new ideas through trial and error.

Meetings
We meet every Thursday throughout the year. Many meetings have a How Do I section for those with equipment, software or technique queries. There is no admission charge on the night. Costs are covered through annual subscriptions .

Outings
Society outings are a regular part of every photographic year. These are organised by the committee to places of photographic interest. Shorter day trips are organised individually between members via the website forum or a couple of phone-calls to whoever is available and willing to head to the hills, the woods, the beach, the bog or wherever their fancy takes them at short notice. These excursions are always enjoyed by everyone regardless of the weather, or the start time and there are never two identical photographs.

Annual Exhibition
We exhibit our work at a major venue during Kilkenny Arts Festival every year. It is the highlight of the year and all members new and not so new are encouraged to participate. There are usually about 50 to 60 printed images on display. Quite a few are purchased by appreciative viewers. We also run a daily slide show of hundreds of images captured by our members throughout the year.

Affiliations
Kilkenny Photographic Society (KPS) is a member of the Southern Association of Camera Clubs (SACC) and the Irish Photographic Federation (IPF) which are tiered umbrella groups for camera clubs and photographic societies in Ireland. We take part in the various competitions and events of both these groups during the year and have in the past hosted some of the competitions. Participation in these events allows the KPS members a broader view of photography and photographic awareness as a whole and is a valuable means of getting to know other members of other clubs and societies.
